Single vision lenses

Single vision lenses have a single power or field of vision over the whole lens and are the most common type of prescription lenses. Depending on your prescription, single vision lenses may allow you to see clearly at distance, reading, or both.

Single vision reading glasses may either be prescription or over-the-counter (OTC). OTC reading glasses are the same power in both eyes, and often use powers such as +1.00, +1.50, +2.00, or +2.50. On the other hand, prescription reading glasses are tailored to you and can be prescribed by your Optometrist. These are customized lenses that account for pupillary distance, reading distance, eye focusing and many other factors to produce the most comfortable, sharp and detailed reading vision.

Progressive Lenses
Progressive lenses are no-line multifocal eyeglass lenses. that look exactly like single vision lenses. In other words, progressive lenses will help you see clearly at all distances without those annoying (and age-defining) “bifocal lines” that are visible in regular bifocals and trifocals.

These lenses have focal ranges for distance, intermediate and near without the appearance of any lines on the lens.

Progressive lenses are line-free multifocals that have a seamless progression of added magnifying power for intermediate and near vision.

The power of progressive lenses changes gradually from point to point on the lens surface, providing the correct lens power for seeing objects clearly at virtually any distance. Progressive lenses sometimes are called “no-line bifocals ” because they don’t have this visible bifocal line. But progressive lenses have a significantly more advanced multifocal design than bifocals or trifocals.

Progressive lens benefits:

  • Significant visual and cosmetics benefits for presbyopes
  • Multiple lens powers across the lens surface that gradually changes in power from point to point, providing clear vision at all distances
  • It eliminates bothersome “image jump” caused by bifocals and trifocals. This is where objects abruptly change in clarity and apparent position when your eyes move across the visible lines in these lenses.
  • Because there are no visible “bifocal lines” in progressive lenses, they give you a more youthful appearance than bifocals or trifocals. This reason alone may be why more people today wear progressive lenses than the number who wear bifocal and trifocals combined.
  • Bifocal Lenses

Bifocals are eyeglasses that have lenses with two different focal lengths and power. This solution can help people experiencing symptoms of presbyopia. While most presbyopes choose progressives or “no-line bifocals”, conventional bifocals lenses have some advantages over progressives.

Bifocal eyeglass lenses contain two lens powers to help you see objects at distance and near clearly. Each viewing area is distinct within the lens meaning there are no areas that are not focused exactly to your prescription. While wearing bifocals, you can experience image jump, which is the displacement of the image of an object occurring when viewing across the borderline between portions of different powers. Because only two powers exist, there is no intermediate vision with these lenses.

The bottom portion of the bifocal lens reduces the amount of focusing effort required to see near objects clearly. The top portion is used to see far objects clearly. Some research suggests wearing bifocals can help control myopia in some children by reducing the focussing demands of reading and near work.

    Trifocal Lenses

Trifocals are eyeglasses that have lenses with three different focal lengths and power. This solution can help people experiencing symptoms of presbyopia. While most presbyopes choose progressives or “no-line bifocals”, conventional trifocal lenses have some advantages over progressives.

Trifocal eyeglass lenses contain three lens powers to help you see objects at distance, intermediate and near. Each viewing area is distinct within the lens meaning there are no areas that are not focused exactly to your prescription. The bottom portion of the trifocal lens reduces the amount of focusing effort required to see near objects clearly. The top portion is used to see far objects clearly. The intermediate zone is for viewing something between 18 to 24 inches away. While wearing trifocals, you can experience image jump, which is the displacement of the image of an object occurring when viewing across the borderline between portions of different powers. Trifocals are fitted a bit higher, with the top line of the intermediate seg placed even with the lower margin of the pupil.

    What is Lens Index?

The index of refraction (or refractive index) of an eyeglass lens material is a number that is a relative measure of how efficiently the material refracts (bends) light, which depends on how fast light travels through the material. The higher the refractive index of a material, the slower light moves through it, which results in greater bending (refracting) of the light rays.

The higher the refractive index of a lens material, the less lens material is required to bend light to the same degree as a lens with a lower refractive index. In other words, for a given eyeglass lens power, a lens made of a material with a high refractive index will be thinner than a lens made of a material with a lower refractive index. The refractive index of current eyeglass lens materials ranges from 1.5 (CR-39 plastic) to 1.74 (a specific variety of high-index plastic). For the same prescription power and lens design, a lens made of CR-39 plastic will be the thickest lens available, and a 1.74 high-index plastic lens will be the thinnest.

All our eyewear packages include lenses with CR-39.

    What is Anti-Reflective Lens Coating?

Anti-reflective coatings (also called “AR coating” or “anti-glare coating”) improves vision, reduces eye strain and makes your eyeglasses look more attractive. These coatings reduce reflections from the front and back surfaces of your eyeglass lenses producing clearer vision for you, and a clearer view of your eyes for whomever you are looking at.

With reflections gone, more light passes through your lenses to optimize visual acuity with fewer distractions, especially at night. Note that the higher the index of refraction of the lens material, the more light that will be reflected from the surface of the lenses and thus allowing more light to enter for good vision. AR enhances your appearance by drawing more attention to your eyes than the reflection and helping you make better “eye contact” with others. This cosmetic benefit makes your eyeglasses look more attractive so that you look the best in all lighting conditions.

Kodak Lens has its own proprietary AR formula, which consist of multiple microscopic layers of metallic oxides of alternating high and low index of refraction. Since each layer affects different wavelengths of light, the more layers there are, the more reflections that are neutralized. Kodak Lens AR coatings have up to seven layers.

    Benefits:

    • Protective layers that provide durability and scratch resistance
    • Several microscopic layers of minerals that effectively reduce reflections over a broad band of wavelengths
    • Decreases irritating glare and reflections
    • Reduces nighttime reflections

Helps you See Clear and Crisp

With ordinary lenses, a portion of visible light is reflected away and doesn’t reach the eye. More reflections and less light mean poor vision. KODAK AR Lenses allow the maximum amount of available light to reach the eye providing clear and crisp vision.

    Available Anti-Reflective Coatings Include:
    • Basic Anti-Reflective Coating (included in our single vision lens packages and 1 upgrade for all Premium HD Single Vision Lenses, progressive and bifocal lenses)
    • Premium Anti-Reflective Coating
    • KODAK Clean’N’CleAR with UV protection
    • Deluxe Anti-Reflective Coating with UV Protection and SATIN (ultra-slick AR enhancement) for best visual and lens performance
    • KODAK Clean’N’CleAR with UV protection and Silk (ultra-slick AR enhancement)
What is Scratch Resistant Lens Coating?

A scratch resistance coating improves the durability and prevents minor scratches that can easily happen to plastic lenses. These minor scratches can damage the surface of the lens and impair vision. A scratch resistance coating acts as a protective layer, which makes the lenses both durable and safer. A scratch resistance coating is NOT scratch proof, but will help maintain and protect the overall condition of the lenses through regular daily usage.

    Lens Material Upgrade Options

    CR-39 Lens Material (1.50 or 1.56)

CR-39 is a plastic lens available in an index of 1.50 or 1.56. Because this lens has a low index, it will be thicker for any given lens power. However, this is also the clearest type of plastic, producing the lowest wavelength aberrations of all eyeglass lens materials.

    Benefits:

    • Excellent optics
    • Low cost
    Safety Lens Material: Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a plastic lens available in an index of 1.59. It has an Abbe value of 30, which means how widely the lens disperses different wavelengths of light as light passes through it. This lens has a moderate index and will not be as thick compared to CR39 for any given lens power, but also not as thin as other higher index lenses. Polycarbonate is super impact resistant and inherently UV blocking making it the lens of choice for safety eyewear, although it can scratch more easily than other types of plastic. Although polycarbonate has the highest amount of wavelength aberrations reducing it’s optical clarity, most wearers do not notice unless looking directly at lights or out of the sides of their glasses.

Lenses with a low Abbe value have high dispersion, which can cause chromatic aberration. This aberration is an optical effect that causes visible coloured halos around objects, especially lights. Experiencing aberration does depend on the wearer, the lens quality and overall eye health. Chromatic aberration is most noticeable when looking through the periphery of eyeglass lenses. It is least noticeable when looking directly through the central optical lens zone, most commonly known as the optical center.

    Benefits:

    • Super impact resistant
    • Blocks UV
    • Light & durable
    Thin & Light Lens Material: Hi-Index 1.60

1.60 is a high-index plastic lens available in an index of 1.60. This is the first of the high-index lenses, creating thinner and lighter lenses than polycarbonate with better optical clarity. 1.60 high-index plastic is inherently UV blocking.

    Benefits:

    • Thin and light
    • Better optical quality than polycarbonate
    • Blocks UV
Super Thin & Light Lens Material: Hi-Index 1.67 or 1.74

    1.67 (Thinner & Lighter):

1.67 is a high-index plastic lens available in an index of 1.67. This is the second of the high-index lenses, creating thinner and lighter lenses than polycarbonate and 1.60 with better optical clarity than polycarbonate. 1.67 high-index plastic is inherently UV blocking.

    Benefits:

    • Thinner and lighter than 1.60
    • Better optical quality than polycarbonate
    • Blocks UV

    1.74 (Thinest & Lightest):

1.74 is a high-index plastic lens available in an index of 1.74. This is the highest of the high-index lenses, creating the thinnest and lightest lenses available with better optical clarity than polycarbonate. 1.74 high-index plastic is inherently UV blocking.

    Benefits:

    • Thinnest and lightest lens available
    • Better optical quality than polycarbonate
    • Blocks UV
    • Lightweight
    Extended Sphere

This lens upgrade helps create a custom and well fabricated lens to accommodate for prescriptions between +3.50 to +7.75 or -5.50 to -7.75. Prescriptions that fall within this range are thicker and more difficult to create. We highly recommend to get hi-index lens materials as well as this upgrade to accommodate higher prescriptions.

    Extended Cylinder

This lens upgrade helps create a custom and well fabricated lens to accommodate for prescriptions with cylinder between -2.00 to -3.75. Prescriptions with cylinder that fall within this range have a more cylindrical shape and more difficult to create. We highly recommend to get hi-index lens materials as well as this upgrade to accommodate prescriptions with higher cylinder.

    Anti-Reflective (AR) Coatings

    Basic Anti-Reflective (AR) Lens Coating

A basic anti-reflective coating (also called “AR coating” or “anti-glare coating”) improves vision, reduces eye strain and makes your eyeglasses look more attractive. Back Side AR (Sun Protection Upgrade)

All the benefits of an anti-reflective (AR) lens, but placed on the back side of the lens to reflect light coming in from the sides. This lens option is best when combined with sun protection upgrade options such as solid tint, gradient tint, or polarized lenses. Since tinted and polarized lenses are dark to help reduce brightness and protect you from the sun, there is no need to reflect light from the front. A backside AR will enhance the performance of the sunglass lens and protect you from light coming from different angles. Backside AR is recommended for all outdoor, bright and sunny conditions.

    BluSelect

A new ophthalmic lens material that helps protect eyes from not only ultraviolet (10-400 nm) light rays, but also high energy violet (HEV) blue light (400 nm – 420 nm wavelength). It is widely known that UV light can cause damage to the cells of our body, including those on the surface and within our eyes. Some studies suggest that even high energy blue light can affect ocular tissues, increasing risk for macular degeneration and cataracts*. High energy blue light may also be associated with visual fatigue associated with extending viewing of digital screens.

The human eye can be damaged by exposure to UV light. Recent studies have shown, however, that shorter wavelength light from 400 nm to 420 nm also may affect the retina, which is the most vulnerable tissue of the eye, and this can be one of the factors, which accelerates the development of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and cataracts*. Although many conventional sunglasses that protect eyes from UV rays, provide protection from shorter wavelength light, while general clear vision correction lenses do not.

    Main benefits of BluSelect lenses:

    • Blocks high energy blue light

Sources of blue light include the sun, digital screens (TVs, computers, laptops, smart phones and tablets), electronic devices, and fluorescent and LED lighting.

About Polycarbonate and Hi-Index 1.74 BluSelect:

For POLY and 1.74 BLUSELECT, patient’s should expect lower blue light filtering of 410 nm and above. Why? Because of the material’s nature and since it already has up to 380 nm UV protection. POLY and 1.74 BLUSELECT materials inherently have UV protection and are great for daytime wear. Below 410 nm, the poly lens is quite effective blocking UV and HEV blue light.

The POLY or 1.74 BluSelect lens will not perform well in the laser penlight demo test because the highly focused beam is between 410 and 415 nm. These lens materials provide effective UV and HEV blue light protection during day time as well as the benefits below. Each lens material is designed to have specific benefits and characteristics. Please understand the pros and cons of each lens material for us to recommend the visual solution that works best for your visual needs.

    Our Recommendations:

For those who want the highest blocking of HEV Blue Light within the BluSelect line, we recommend using 1.56, 1.60 or 1.67 lens materials.

For those who also want the benefit of a durable and impact resistant lens then we recommend polycarbonate material. Polycarbonate is impact resistant, but most effective in HEV blue light filtering and UV protection up to 410 nm. HEV blue light filtering between 410 – 420 nm and up is subjected to 41% blocking rates.

For those who also want the benefit of the thinnest and lightest material then we recommend Hi-Index 1.74. This lens material is the thinnest, lightest, and most effective in blue light filtering and UV protection up to 410 nm.

Since many factors can cause these conditions, consumer caution is advised. We would like to properly advise and provide our patients with the most recent optical technology advancements by offering visual solutions to improve your overall visual well being. Polarized (Sun Protection Upgrade)

Polarized lenses provide the clearest vision in sunglass lenses by filtering all light travelling in a vertical direction. These lenses help to eliminate glare especially when looking at shiny surfaces, like on the water. Polarized lenses come in set colours and cannot be modified. Note that viewing LCD devices may be difficult with polarized lenses as LCD screens only emit their image with light travelling in one direction. Please visit us to learn more and see demo lenses.

Mirror added to Tint, Polarized or Transtions XTRActive (Sun Protection Upgrade)

Mirrors can be added to any tinted, polarized or even Transitions XTRActive lenses. Mirrors help to reduce glare and brightness above and beyond what can be achieved with your lens tint. Different coloured mirrors are also a great way to customize your look and vision. It is especially important to add Backside AR to any mirrored lenses as glare produced by light entering from the side is exacerbated by a mirror on the front of the lens. Prism correction is used in eyeglasses for people who have diplopia or double vision. This is when someone sees two separate images of one object. The prism made in lenses helps align the two images you see so that only one is image is seen. With double vision, two images are seen because the light falls in different places on the retina of each eye. A prism used in eyeglasses bends light before it travels through the eye. The light is redirected so it will fall correctly on the retina in each eye. The brain then does its usual work of fusing the two retina images together to produce one, clear picture.

Who might benefit from prism correction?

A prism can be used for double vision from eye misalignment when caused by:

    • Eye muscle problems, such as myasthenia gravis, Graves’ disease, or strabismus
    • Neurological (brain-related) issues, such as head injuries, stroke, migraine, or tumor.
    • Nerve-related problems, like multiple sclerosis or diabetes mellitus

KODAK Anti-Reflective SILK Lens Coating Overview

    More Lens Upgrade Information

CHOICE BluSelect Lenses: A new ophthalmic lens material that helps protect eyes from not only ultraviolet (100 – 400 nm) light rays but also 400 nm – 420 nm High Energy Visible (HEV) light. The human eye can be damaged by exposure to sunlight, in particular UV light. Recent studies have shown, however, that shorter wavelength light from 400 nm to 420 nm also damages the retina, which is the most vulnerable tissue of the eye, and this can be one of the factors, which accelerates the development of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), cataracts and sleeping disorders*.

Sources of blue light include the sun, digital screens (TVs, computers, laptops, smart phones and tablets), electronic devices, and fluorescent and LED lighting.
