Specialty Contact Lenses

Specialty contact lenses are custom made to fit the unique surface of the wearer’s eye. They are designed to help those with high prescriptions, lots of astigmatism and corneal irregularities. These lenses are made of a solid gas permeable material and provide much crisper vision than your traditional soft lenses for these unique prescriptions.

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses are made from a rigid, oxygen permeable material.  RGP lenses are currently less popular than soft lenses but offer a number of advantages especially for those with a unique ocular surface and/or prescription. Patients with very high prescriptions often find that RGP lenses provide better vision than soft contact lenses, and sometimes even their glasses!
RGP lenses are available in spherical, toric, bifocal and multifocal options. A unique type of RGP lens is used for Orthokeratology. CLICK HERE to learn more about Orthokeratology.

Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are life-changing for many people who wear them. These large diameter lenses cover the entire cornea making them more comfortable than traditional rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses. Scleral lenses can be used to provide exceptional vision to those with corneal irregularities. Because these lenses hold a tear reservoir over the surface of the eye, they can also be used to heal the cornea in conditions where the ocular surface is damaged such as severe dry eye disease.

Scleral lenses successfully treat the following conditions:

  • Keratoconus
  • High prescriptions including irregular or high astigmatism
  • Corneal scarring or trauma
  • Pellucid marginal degeneration
  • Corneal ectasia
  • Severe dry eye
  • Sjögren’s syndrome
  • Lasik Complications
